General Information

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is located about 25km west of Sandakan in Sabah, Malaysia. The centre opened in 1964 as the first official orang utan rehabilitation project for rescued orphaned baby orangutans from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunting or kept as pets. The orphaned orang utans are trained to survive again in the wild and are released as soon as they are ready. The sanctuary is located within the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve which covers an area of 4,294 ha (10,610 acres), much of which is virgin rainforest. Today around 60 to 80 orang utans are living in this reserve.

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is the only sun bear conservation centre in the world.  It was founded in Sabah, Malaysia in 2008 with two aims to provide care and rehabilitation to rescued sun bears; and to increase awareness of sun bears internationally. These aims work to ensure the absolute right of every bear to live in the forest. The facility includes large forest enclosures to provide a natural environment suited to the needs and welfare of the sun bears and facilitate their rehabilitation back into the wild. In 2014, the Centre opens to the public. Visitors can learn about sun bears and observe them in their natural habitat.

Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) situated 23 kilometres from Sandakan Town and not too far from the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre, the RDC’s main highlights are its exhibition halls, the Plant Discovery Garden, the Kapili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, environmental education programmes and a small lake for boat rides. It provides visitors a chance to get intimate with nature and become the official venue for the annual Borneo Bird Festival which attracts the participation of birding enthusiasts from all over the world.

Selingan Turtle Island Park is located 40km North of Sandakan. The island consists of several islands, including Selingan, Bakungan Kecil and Gulisan island. It provides a safe haven for the endangered green turtles and toads and it is a rare opportunity to let you witness the process of lay ashore. Selingan is the largest island and the park's headquarter was bulit on the island. There are also hatcheries, accommodation and other basic facilities. The other two islands are mostly engaged in activities to protect nature.

Gomantong Cave is 95 km from Sandakan City and is located in the heart of the Gorman East Rainforest Reserve. Known by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as the world's top edible bird's nest distribution center. Therefore, for centuries, the Gomandong cave was also regarded as the concentration of bird's nest. It is worth noting that this cave is made up of two caves,Simud Hitam and Simud Putih.
